Congressional and Presidential Good Wishes
Two U.S. Senators and four U.S. Representatives who are social workers sent a letter, observing the month of March as National Professional Social Work month. In that letter, which was included in the gala program, they wrote:
"Social workers use their collective power everyday to strengthen our nations families, help individuals overcome adversity, and advocate for social change and justice. Social work relies on the power of many people thinking, working, and acting together to create more positive environments in communities everywhere. This strength has never been more evident than in the days following September 11th."
"Tonight and throughout the month of March we will celebrate the successes we have achieved as social workers, while never losing sight of the challenges we continue to face in the service to others."
Those signing the letter are:
- Barbara A. Mikulski, U. S. Senator
- Debbie Stabenow, U.S. Senator
- Susan Davis, U.S. Representative
- Barbara Lee, U.S. Representative
- Edolphus Towns, U.S. Representative
- Ciro Rodriguez, U.S. Representative.
President George W. Bush also sent warm greetings in a letter in which he wrote:
"Since the Settlement Movement of the late 19th century, social workers have provided hope and healing in communities across America. They improve the lives of individuals and families by addressing concerns related to education, health, substance abuse, criminal justice, and the general welfare of those they serve. During these extraordinary times, they have also worked with local, state and Federal authorities, as well as private organizations such as the Red Cross, to help Americans affected by the attacks of September 11, 2001.
"During National Professional Social Work Month, we celebrate the hard work and commitment of our countrys social workers. Through your efforts, you demonstrate the American spirit of generosity, compassion, and caring for those in need. Laura joins me in sending our best wishes."
In 1984, President Reagan officially designated March as National Professional Social Work Month to honor the contributions made by our nations social workers. Since then, NASW kicks off a year long public service campaign every March to increase the publics understanding of the social work profession and to promote critical social issues.
Over the years, these campaigns have reflected current issues and social problems, including children in poverty, homelessness, racial and ethnic harmony, equal employment, and health care. This years themeThe Power of Social Work: Community Needs. Human Connectionsshowcases the myriad ways social workers are making a difference in individual lives and in diverse communities across the United States.
