NASW Social Work Pioneers®
Dr. Herman Curiel has been a Hispanic social work leader in the states of Oklahoma and Texas in the local, county, state and national levels since 1981. His organizational, advocacy and leadership skills succeeded in the enactment of legislation in two states for legal regulation of social work practice.
Since 1981, Dr. Curiel has been on the faculty at The University of Oklahoma. He has published several books on Hispanic and aging populations, HIV/AIDS outreach and mental health.
Dr. Curiel has been awared the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Oklahoma chapter of NASW, and the Care Award for outstanding contribution to the cause, Carepoint: a consortium of AIDS Resources and Education.
Dr. Curiel received a Master of Social Work degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1962 and his PhD from Texas A&M University in 1979.
